The plan, known as the “PITTSBURGH Plan,” will cover two prescription drugs, Celebrex and Vioxx, which are approved for treating arthritis and other forms of pain. Both of these drugs have been associated with heart attacks and strokes.
Celebrex is the first pain reliever for the condition, and Vioxx, which was originally approved as a treatment for some forms of cancer, is the first drug approved for treating osteoarthritis in patients.
Both Celebrex and Vioxx are approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of arthritis and other forms of pain.
The Plan will cover only one of the drugs, which are used to treat osteoarthritis.
The cost for the Celebrex will start at $1,300 per month and will rise to $5,000 per month for Vioxx.
The price of the Celebrex will rise to $300 per month for the remaining 2,000 prescriptions, or $1,300 for a one month supply.
